Using Swiss Balls to Improve Health and Fitness

Have you ever wondered what Swiss balls can be used for?

Do you wish to learn a range of new exercises that are both fun and beneficial?

Do you want to improve the core stability of your clients?

Swiss balls (otherwise known as ‘stability balls’, ‘gym balls’ etc) can be used to improve, strength, balance, coordination, muscular endurance, and posture, and can be used to rehabilitate injuries and reduce pain. Ineffective use, however, may cause injury and lack of progress.

This workshop will teach you how to:

• Choose the correct ball size for effective exercise prescription for a range of clients
• Prescribe a range of Swiss ball exercises safely and effectively to gain optimal results
• Improve client’s core stability and reduce back pain through appropriate exercise prescription
• Look after Swiss balls correctly so that they do not burst and cause injury

After attending ‘Using Swiss Balls to improve Health and Fitness’ you will feel more confident in using Swiss ball exercises and will be able to offer a superior service to your clients.

This workshop is geared towards level 1, 2 and 3 instructors and trainers who have limited knowledge of using Swiss balls, and for those who want to expand their knowledge and learn new techniques.

The workshop lasts 3 hours and is composed of both practical and theory activities. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Special Populations and Exercise

The majority of exercise guidelines are designed for the so-called ‘normal population’. However, most people don’t fall into the ‘normal population’ bracket.

The incidence of modern health problems such as diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure are at an all-time high, and continue to rise.

Inappropriate exercise prescription may have devastating consequences with special population groups, whilst exercise can be an effective tool in reducing health risks and promoting good health.

This workshop will teach you:

• To identify and describe the main health problems that exist in today’s society
• How exercise can help to reduce specific diseases and promote health
• To give effective exercise prescription to a range of clients, thereby improving their well being
• Which exercises and methods of exercise may be detrimental to health in specific populations

After attending ‘Special Populations and Exercise’ you will be better equipped to deal with the wide range of clients that attend your gym, improving your chances of gaining results and increasing income.

This workshop is geared towards level 2 and 3 instructors who want to expand their knowledge regarding special populations.

Training the Athletic Client

Do you currently train sports people?

Do your client’s want to improve their sports performance through fitness?

Is your current exercise prescription helping or hindering your client’s progress?

Many athletes join gyms to improve fitness levels for their sport. However, many trainers are unsure about how to prescribe effective sports-specific training programmes to help the athlete.

This workshop will teach you how to:
• Assess the fitness requirements of a wide range of sports, allowing you to successfully choose appropriate training methods
• Devise sports-specific training sessions and programmes that will improve athletic fitness
• Modify training variables for continual progress
• Prepare different exercise programmes for the various stages of the season, so that optimal performance can be achieved and injury risk is reduced

After attending ‘Training the Athletic Client’ you will have enhanced knowledge in exercise prescription for sports performers, allowing you to effectively train a whole new range of clients.

This workshop is geared towards level 2 and 3 instructors who are currently, or may train athletes. The principles in the workshop can also be applied to improving occupational fitness.

The workshop lasts 3 hours and is composed of both practical and theory activities. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Exercising with Alternative or Minimal Equipment

The gym is busy … two people are already waiting for the machine that you want … what are your alternatives? In today’s busy gym environment it is important that trainers are equipped with a repertoire of alternative exercises.

This workshop will teach you how to:

• Use a wide variety of different exercises and equipment to achieve your session aims and objectives
• Adapt exercises to meet the needs and requirements of individual clients
• Use varied training tools and exercise techniques to enhance training programmes and avoid boredom

After attending ‘Exercising with Alternative or Minimal Equipment’ you will have acquired a scope of new training tools to enhance the creativity of programme design.

This workshop is geared towards level 1, 2 and 3 instructors who wish to gain an affinity of new exercises.

The workshop lasts 3 hours and is composed of both practical and theory activities. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Anatomy Overview

Effective exercise programmes are based on a sound understanding of the principles of anatomy and physiology.

This workshop will teach you to:

• Identify and describe the major systems of the body
• Skeletal system
• Muscular system
• Cardiovascular system
• Respiratory system
• Describe how the systems are linked
• Examine the systems importance in regards to exercise

After attending ‘Anatomy Overview’ you will have an enhanced knowledge of anatomy and its importance in accordance with exercise prescription.

This workshop is geared towards level 1 instructors and level 2 instructors who wish to refresh their anatomy knowledge.

The theory-based workshop lasts 3 hours. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Physiology Overview


Effective exercise programmes are based on a sound understanding of the principles of anatomy and physiology.

This workshop will teach you:

• To describe the cardio-respiratory short-term responses to exercise
• To describe long-term body adaptations of the cardio-respiratory, neuromuscular and skeletal systems
• How energy systems respond to the demands of exercise

After attending ‘Physiology Overview’ you will have an enhanced knowledge of physiology and its importance in accordance with exercise prescription.

This workshop is geared towards level 1 instructors and level 2 instructors who wish to refresh their physiology knowledge.

The theory-based workshop lasts 3 hours. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Theory and Methodology of Programme Prescription

Effective exercise programme design should encompass several training principles designed to optimise progression, and only through detailed planning and careful consideration of these can both short and long-term objectives be achieved.

This workshop will teach you how to:

• Identify individualised training needs
• Identify the key principles of training to optimise performance
• Devise a long-term training plan to maximise and ensure both client results and retention
• Prescribe appropriate training methods to suit individual needs
• Optimise results through effective rest and recovery

After attending ‘Theory and Methodology of Programme Prescription’ you will have gained an insight into the basis of programme design, allowing you to prescribe effective training plans.

This workshop is geared towards level 2 and 3 instructors who want to gain a greater knowledge of the methodology of programme design.

The theory-based workshop lasts 3 hours. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).

Fitness Testing

Fitness testing could be classed as the first stage of an exercise plan. Regular testing can improve client motivation and retention, assess strengths and weaknesses and can also provide an extra source of income to the trainer/gym. However, instructors must ensure that tests are performed under stringent testing conditions to validate results.

This workshop will teach you how to:

• Perform a range of basic fitness tests to assess client’s strengths and areas for improvements
• Interpret and assess client’s results in relation to normative data to establish effective programme design
• Evaluate the validity and reliability of the tests

After attending this workshop you will have gained an insight into the methods and advantages of fitness testing.

This workshop is geared towards level 1 and 2 instructors, and level 3 candidates wishing to refresh their fitness testing knowledge.

The theory and practical based workshop lasts 3 hours. All candidates will receive workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. (Please note that this workshop does not contribute towards CPD points).
